Every category average is a survivor list. The funds that closed are not sitting lower down the ranking. They left the sample, and they left because they were losing.

The honest scorecards count the ones that died. They start with every fund that existed on day one and grade against that. That is exactly why their numbers read harsher than your app's.

You had to pick on day one, not on day 3650. The ten year table is a list of answers to a question you could not have asked yet. A rule you can read up front does not need the benefit of hindsight.
A ten year track record only exists for the funds that lasted ten years. Read the ranking knowing a quarter of the field walked off before the finish, and that nobody moved them to the bottom. They were just removed from the photograph.
