Three Rules
Before You Sort
by CAGR
1
Convert the fall to recovery cost
A 25% fall needs 33.3% to break even. That is not growth. That is repair. Read the drawdown number as a bill, not a dip.
2
Check the down year
A backtest that only covers a bull run tells you nothing. 2025 was the first real test for many strategies. Most failed it. One did not.
3
Ask what you would actually do at the trough
Not what the spreadsheet assumes. The strategy you can hold through month eight of a drawdown is the strategy that compounds. The one you sell at the bottom never gets the chance.
Sort by the fall. The return takes care of itself.
The CAGR is the finish line. The drawdown is whether you are still running when you get there.
